Arriving on Phi Phi Island for the first time can be a little daunting. What happens? Where do I go? Do I need to pay somebody? Am I going to get scammed? I just want to get to my accommodation! I get it. Been there, done that! It is a really simple procedure and we hope to put your mind at ease a little as to what you can expect when you arrive on the island.
Pulling into Tonsai Pier
Tonsai Pier is the main pier on Phi Phi. There is another pier on the north of the island but unless you are staying at an accommodation in that part of town you will want to get to Tonsai Pier. This is the first stop usually and where most of the people will get off the ferry. You will probably have to wait a bit if you have a lot of luggage. This tends to get piled up and takes a bit longer to get off the boat than if you are a light traveler.
Once you have luggage, carefully get off the boat and follow the route from the pier. You will be directed to a desk where you have to pay 20 Thai Baht. This is the fee for coming to Phi Phi and the money goes towards the conservation of the area. For just 20 THB it is a bargain really! If you have the money ready it will speed things up and you will be able to get off the pier quicker.
Finding your Accommodation
A lot of the accommodation on Phi Phi provides shuttle services from the pier to the property. There are no cars on Phi Phi so this means that the shuttle is provided on foot but the hotels have carts for luggage. This makes it easy for you and there are even some longtail boat transfers. After you have paid the fee, you will see the hotel representatives lining up along the pier walkway before reaching the McDonalds.
They all have signs for the various resorts and hotels on the island. If you know that the accommodation you booked offers this service, simply look for the board with the name of the hotel / resort on it. When you find it, let the person know that you are staying there and he will probably tell you to wait for a little while whilst other visitors find him also. After a while he’ll direct you to follow him, put your luggage in a cart and lead you to the property. There you can check in and start to enjoy your time on the island in earnest. We hope you have fun!
